What Causes Black Lines to Form Around Dental Crowns?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The dark line you\u2019re seeing on your crown is most likely caused by an older type of crown known as a porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown. These crowns have a metal substructure that lends them strength and stability once bonded to teeth, and they\u2019re covered with a layer of porcelain to ensure a natural appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, over time, several things can cause this metal edge to become visible. Gum recession due to poor oral hygiene might cause the surrounding gum tissue to recede, revealing more of the crown. Wear and tear that stems from everyday use can also gradually wear down a crown\u2019s porcelain layer. In rare cases, if the crown was improperly placed, the dark line can begin to show much sooner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Should I Do If My Crown Has a Black Line?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Metal-free crowns are made entirely from tooth-colored materials, often zirconia or all-ceramic porcelain, and as their name implies, there is no metal whatsoever. However, no structural integrity is compromised by using these non-metal materials, meaning that you\u2019re opting for a new restoration will look great and<\/em> function optimally for years to come. Plus, these restorations are also more biocompatible and gentler on gum tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
