When patients in the Hanford, CA area are interested in whitening their teeth, they may be overwhelmed at the options available to them at the local drugstore. In the oral health care aisles, there are a variety of solutions to choose from, but which one is best? The benefits of professional teeth whitening treatments are explained to patients at Hanford Family Dental Center by Drs. Nikunj Raiyani and Sukhmani Marwaha.

What methods of whitening are available at Hanford Family Dental Center?

There are two options available in our practice, including:

  • Zoom! WhiteSpeed treatment
  • Take-home whitening trays

Which method is best for my smile?

Professional whitening in general is much stronger and longer-lasting than anything available over-the-counter, making it a more desirable option for those who are serious about brightening the smile. With in-office whitening and take-home whitening, patients get to choose whether to have their procedure done quickly in the office in just one visit or over the course of time in the privacy of their own home. Take-home whitening trays and gels are less expensive, so they may be the better option for a patient who has a tight budget. However, those who want to see results immediately are encouraged to ask about in-office power bleaching with Zoom! WhiteSpeed treatment. Our dentists can walk patients through the pros and cons of each option to help them make an educated decision as to how to move forward with adding brilliance to their smiles.

Who is not a candidate for teeth whitening?

Patients with traditional orthodontics in place, such as metal bracket and wire braces, will want to wait until their treatment is over before considering brightening solutions. Additionally, patients with restorations such as crowns, bridges, or veneers will want to find out more before moving forward. This is because restorations do not respond to whitening, and these are often put in place to match the existing natural color of the teeth. If whitening treatments are performed, the restorations would look dull and discolored in comparison. Patients serious about whitening their smile and maintaining it may want to consider the investment of replacing restorations in their smile to match the newly whitened teeth. However, this would be an added cost that would have to be considered before continuing.

What can I expect from the whitening process?

For in-office bleaching, patients are encouraged to set aside approximately two hours for the entire treatment. The teeth are cleaned by our dental hygienist, and then barrier gel is applied to the gums to protect them. Then, the whitening product is administered onto the surfaces of the teeth and activated using a specialized Zoom! light. Within an hour, the process is complete. The dental hygienist will clean the teeth a final time to remove any leftover whitening gel or barrier gel and reveal the patient’s brand-new look!

On the other hand, the in-home whitening treatments are a little different. Patients who decide to have the home system as their treatment come into the practice to have their custom trays made using impressions of the smile. The trays are fabricated using medical-grade, high quality plastic. The dentist will send patients home with whitening gel and instruct them on how to use the gel with the trays to get optimum results. Patients then whiten their smiles daily in the privacy of their own home. Over the course of several weeks, the smile gets brighter, and patients can continue to whiten using their trays and gel until they have reached their desired results. Patients can also use the whitening trays and gel to whiten as needed to maintain their new, brilliant, and beautiful smile!
